“Helping writers express themselves more clearly, honestly and powerfully is my passion. Being a book editor both satiates and inspires my curiosity about everything. Books connect people to each other through shared experience. And I think connection is our most essential human impulse. I consider it a privilege to be a part of that process.”Cherise Fisher
Cherise Davis Fisher began her career in publishing as the assistant to the Editor-in-Chief of Dell Publishing a month after graduating from Yale University, where she received a Bachelor’s Degree with distinction in American Studies. She cut her teeth on her first major acquisition, DO THEY HEAR YOU WHEN YOU CRY by Fauziya Kassindja with Layli Miller Bashir, which has been published around the world. She also managed the Laurel imprint, attending the MLA conference every year.
She later moved to Simon & Schuster, where she built a strong list of commercial fiction and non-fiction titles covering a broad spectrum of topics including Christianity and spirituality, relationships, business and career development, sexuality, health and fitness, pop reference and pop culture, illustrated books and commercial and literary African American fiction.
After Simon & Schuster, she moved to Penguin, spending four years as the Editor-in-Chief of Plume, where her extensive trade paperback experience shaped the success of Plume’s publishing program. Plume, a trade paperback division of Penguin USA, is the publisher of many bestselling and award winning authors including Tracy Chevalier, Eckhart Tolle, Jenny McCarthy, Ayn Rand, August Wilson, and Karen Joy Fowler, among others.
Over the course of her twenty year career, she has shepherded several books to nationally bestselling status and worked with scores of new and experienced authors, including George Lopez, Janet Attwood and Chris Attwood, Michael Baisden, Pat Croce, Leonard Maltin, Todd Wilbur, Nelson George, Paule Marshall, Tony Parsons, Bil Wright, Farrah Gray and Victoria Christopher Murray.
Born in the Bronx, raised in New Jersey, and refined at The Brearley School, Cherise is a proud Montserratian and devoted mother/student of her daughters, Lauryn & Nina.
It is her intention that all the books she helps bring into the world are relevant, enduring, and maximize joy and productivity in the lives of readers everywhere.
